College-Bound Students Must Write College Admissions Essays

College admissions essays are nothing like the usual writing assignments that a high school senior has been asked to do for teachers to earn grades. For those who do not like to write, they’re something to be feared. However, when a student has a combination of suspect grades and/or test […]

Which College Admissions Officers Have the Harder Job?

One of the more pleasant experiences of being a college advisor has been the opportunity to meet and chat with college admissions officers at all types of schools. For the most part they’re nice people, some more experienced as well as more knowledgable than others. But they all want to find […]

The Alumni Relations Office Must Be a Stop on Every Campus Visit

Four Questions to Ask About Religiously Affiliated Colleges

Slightly more than a year ago, I visited Grove City College, a Christian-affiliated institution. Most recently, the college retained 92 percent of the freshmen who entered in 2014 and graduated 76 percent of the freshmen who entered in 2010. This is an excellent performance for any school of any size. The visit also led […]

Five Considerations About Campus Politics

During my freshman year in college, I covered campus politics for the Rutgers Daily Targum, one of the better college daily papers you will ever read. The stories of campus activism at Rutgers in the very late 1970s were much like they are on other campuses today, only there was […]

The Senior Year is the Most Important Year on a High School Transcript

There are few things that I find really different between the current generation of high school students and myself when I was in high school. But there is one major difference; the way that senior year is considered in a college application. Back in “my day” most college-bound students had […]
