Meet A Student Panel From Centre College (KY)
A short time ago I did a post about Centre College (NY), one of the Colleges That Change Lives. That post featured an interview with Pam Baughman, the College’s Assistant Dean for Admission and Financial Aid. Pam is not only a senior administrator. She is also an alumnus as well as the mother of an alumnus. Pam has been around Centre College long enough to see how the college has changed over time.
After we finished our conversation, Pam offered to organize a student panel to tell you more about Centre College. I took her up on the request, as long as at least one panelist came from New Jersey.
You will listen to a panel of four current Centre College seniors and one recent graduate talk up the college along with Pam Baughman. Three hail from the Northeast, one from Kentucky, right in college’s backyard, and one from Ghana. Their responses are unscripted and they represent their alma mater very well.
Although I know that New Jersey high school students want to go out of state, they do not usually venture as far as Kentucky. However, as Pam and I discussed, Centre is a school that offers a great education at a very reasonable price for a private college. The college also has an exceptionally loyal alumni base, aka ‘Centre Mafia’, and extremely high levels of alumni satisfaction. Many reside around Louisville, Lexington and Cincinnati, but there are also large groups in Nashville, Atlanta and Washington DC. Centre alumni include two US Supreme Court Justices. Associate Justice John Marshall Harlan, who graduated in 1850, cast the lone dissenting vote in Plessy v. Ferguson, opposing the idea of ‘separate but equal’ education in 1892. Fred Vinson, who graduated in 1909, was appointed Chief Justice by President Harry S. Truman in 1946.
Alumni satisfaction is an important indicator of what a college can do for a prospective student. Private colleges like Centre rely heavily on alumni support to fund scholarships, academic opportunities and student programs. But alumni satisfaction starts with student satisfaction. Alumni will support their alma mater when they had happy experiences. The students you will hear will become fine members of the Centre Mafia.
I hope that you will listen to this student panel, not only if you want to consider Centre College, but also so that you can make the best informed decision on any college. These students joined me at night, their own choice, to tell their stories. Please listen in now!
